Condom Use: Effective HIV Prevention

Condoms are one of the most effective and readily available methods for preventing the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Importance of Consistent and Correct Use:

  • Consistent Use: Using condoms consistently during all sexual encounters (vaginal, anal, and oral) is crucial for their effectiveness.
  • Correct Use: Proper condom use is essential:
    • Check for Expiration: Ensure the condom is not expired.
    • Check for Damage: Inspect the condom for any tears or holes before use.
    • Apply Correctly:
      • Leave space at the tip for semen collection.
      • Roll the condom onto an erect penis all the way to the base.
      • Use water-based lubricant for smoother application.
    • Withdraw Safely: Withdraw while the penis is still erect and hold onto the condom at the base to prevent spillage.
    • Dispose of Properly: Wrap the used condom in a tissue and discard it in the trash.

Types of Condoms:

  • Latex Condoms: The most common type, available in various sizes and textures.
  • Polyurethane Condoms: An alternative for people with latex allergies.
  • Female Condoms: Worn internally by women.

Effectiveness:

  • When used correctly and consistently, condoms are highly effective in reducing the risk of HIV transmission.
  • However, no method of contraception is 100% effective.
